Final Blog/Essay

Thesis:During my time doing the social media diaries I have learned a great deal about the way the people judge and asses each other using stereotypes. This method should never be used because stereotypes are often negative and hurtful toward others.

A stereotype is a widely held image of a certain race or ethnicity that is usually based on some half - truth. Stereotypes are a powerful influence on how people think of each other. Throughout the media, stereotypes are portrayed in a wide variety of ways. The media uses negative stereotypes to portray their characters whether in a movie or in a t.v show. Millions of people think that the way the characters are being portrayed in media is the actual way that they are. Facing these stereotypes a step into abolishing negative stereotypes.

Everyone faces stereotypes and their harsh effects. In the media, certain groups are targeted and used more than others. In my research, I have found that the African American community is and has been targeted by the media throughout the centuries. In the beginning of American Media, African American characters were represented as lazy, unintelligent, and violent. They were depicted as having unkempt hair, and a wide grin. This helped bring the detrimental stereotype of African Americans to the United States. Another representation of the African American stereotype was Sambo. Sambo was also seen as a docile but lazy servant to their white masters. White slave owners used this image to broadcast it throughout America. Many people took this picture of Sambo as fact and thought of every other African American as Sambo. These stereotypes are only some of the many ways that stereotypes intrude on the way we look at another and there are many ways to stop it.

There are many ways of dealing with the negative stereotypes that are in the media today. Just because one person has certain features or acts in a certain way doesn’t mean that all the people that are in that race or ethnicity act that same way. Stereotypes are actions that every race and ethnicity have but just certain traits are heightened to each race. For example, Jews are seen as thrifty and economical when not all Jews are cheap. In fact, I know of few Jews that are cheap. Another example is that Asians are geniuses. This is not true either. It is true that some Asians are smart, but not all of them are. In every race their are people that are cheap, smart, unintelligent, good looking, ugly looking, etc. That doesn't mean that all people act that way as well. The fist step to destroying negative stereotypes is to take it upon yourself to forget these stereotypes and judge each person by what you know they have done, not by the things that their race has done. If this is done correctly and efficiently, stereotypes will have no power whatsoever and the negative way that people look on another will be ruined.

Regardless of a persons race and ethnicity, people should be judged on their actions rather than be judged by what people of the same ethnic background have done. Advertisement agencies still don’t understand the power and influence that they have over people and they can change the world for the better by decimating the stereotypes that are used in the media.

African American Stereotypes

African Americans have a lot of stereotypes just as any other race or ethnicity. Some African American stereotypes are that African American people don’t like to work and that they are lazy. Another stereotype is that American Americans are really good athletes and are good at every sport. Some really negative stereotypes about African American people are that they don’t take care of their children, have been incarcerated in some point of their lives and that African American men only like white women. These stereotypes have created a negative way at which people look at African Americans and it should be stopped immediately.

Female Stereotypes

Men and Women both have their stereotypes and especially through social media. Some of these stereotypes are that women are not as strong as men, women have clean jobs, don't play sports, raise children ,cook and clean the house, don’t play video games, and are never supposed ti be in charge. In the media such as t.v. shows, advertisements, and movies women are portrayed as weak and subservient to males. In video games, women are highly sexualized and rarely appear a the hero in video games. In t.v. shows and movies women are portrayed as helpless, weak, and always in need of a man to save them. If media producers and advertisers find a way to stop showing females as powerless and delicate, then these stereotypes can be averted.

Asian Stereotypes

Asian have a lot of stereotypes some good and some bad. Some Asian stereotypes are that all Asians look the same to westerners. Also that Asians are very intelligent and are never dumb. Some other stereotypes of Asians are that Asian parents are very strict,Asian people can’t see and that Asian drivers are bad drivers. These stereotypes usually lead to other individuals making negative ideas about Asian people just because of stereotypes that are usually not true. A lot of comedians and comedic shows use Asian stereotypes as comedy and spreads this even further. Shows like Family Guy, American Dad,Glee and many more. The more shows show stereotypes the more people start to accept them as fact. To stop this tv shows have to stop showing negative stereotypes as a form of comedy.

Stereotypes of Males

Each gender has their own stereotypes and males have a lot of stereotypes that are not necessarily true. For example, some male stereotypes are that men like to work on cars, and that men are not nurses, men do hard and dirty jobs like a construction worker or a mechanic. They are not secretaries or teachers. Also some other male stereotypes are that men do not clean the house or raise their children. Male stereotypes are portrayed in many different ways in media. Especially in the 1930's, movies showed men being the dominant figure of the household and men would have the big roles in movies and in television. In addition to movies and television, male stereotypes are depicted in advertisements as well.

Stereotypes

                                                                                                                                    Joshua Gilardi

Stereotypes are certain characteristics that are used to categorize certain people and

races.Stereotypes are used with males, females, old people, young people, etc.  Even

though stereotypes are based on truths they can hurt people. Stereotypes also leads

aggression toward other people.Stereotypes are often incorrect and this leads to people

judging other people without getting to know them. For example, if a person is in need of

tutoring and his/her options are an African American or an Asian, they will pick the Asian.

This can hurt the person who needs tutoring because the African American can be smarter

than the Asian, but because he used a stereotype he lost out on a great opportunity. These

ways that stereotypes are harmful to people.
